Used in metalworking and machining, a collet is a collar which compresses to clamp tightly around spindle-shaped tools, holding them securely on the machine. Collets are typically used in milling machines, lathes, tap wrenches, or grinders. Collets provide the benefits of precise centering, force clamping, shock resistance, and quick tool switch-out. Collet chucks, a sub form of collet, are also used to hold round shank tools (such as drill bits) on drills, milling machines, and lathes. A variety of collet accessories are available to support collets.
