External halyard poles are most commonly used on larger flag poles (between 30ft and 60ft) and the halyard is outside the flag pole with the lower block and cleat at the base of the pole. Internal halyard poles are more commonly used for smaller poles (under 30ft) and the halyard runs through the inside of the pole with the cleat located at the base of the pole.

Fiberglass, aluminum, and wood are the materials most commonly used for flag poles. Fiberglass and aluminum are most often used for larger poles. Wood is primarily used for smaller poles.

The most important thing to look for would be the size of the pole used versus the size of the stand. The stand should be large enough that the pole does not put excessive stress on the stand or base.

With proper maintenance, you can expect your flag pole to last anywhere from 20 to 50 years. The life of the pole will vary based on environmental and installation factors.
