5 Tips for Minimizing Your Repair Tasks and Your Carbon Footprint

10/12/22 - Zoro Staff

When it comes to monthly to-dos, building maintenance shouldn’t be a daunting task. Doing less—while helping the environment—is possible with a few easy product swaps or routine changes.

With these 5 tips from our experts, you will prolong your equipment’s life, minimize your maintenance and repair tasks, and reduce your carbon footprint.

Tip #1: Make Smart Lighting Choices

Improve the longevity of your lighting systems and reduce your building’s energy consumption by switching to smart lighting.

Smart lighting systems are highly efficient and use LED or CFL bulbs instead of traditional incandescent bulbs, reducing the energy used to illuminate a room. This simple yet effective swap allows your lights to last longer, as incandescent bulbs have a lifespan of only 750 to 2,000 hours compared to LED smart lights that work continuously for 35,000 to 50,000 hours.

As an added benefit, smart lighting can be motion-sensored and controlled remotely through apps so that they aren’t lighting an area that is not being used.

Tip #2: Implement Automated Systems

Track preventive maintenance by offloading maintenance reminders to an automated software system.

The right software allows you to track equipment’s age, previous issues, maintenance history, and can schedule any future maintenance checkups.

This not only makes your life easier, but helps eliminate paper waste from paper work orders or maintenance requests.

Tip #3: Go Green with Effective Cleaning Alternatives

By swapping out harsh cleaning chemicals for environmentally friendly alternatives, you ensure a healthy working environment and your building’s cleanliness.

With eco-friendly products, fewer toxic chemicals are released into the air and toxic runoff into waterways is reduced. What’s more, eco-friendly products often use recycled materials for packaging!

Tip #4: Use Multipurpose Machines

If your building relies heavily on computers or machinery, investing in multipurpose machines that can perform multiple tasks saves space, reduces maintenance and repair tasks, and saves energy.

Tip #5: Make Your Washroom Green

Bathrooms are often the hub of water waste and the epicenter of daunting repairs. Fortunately, several opportunities to bring sustainability to the washroom and minimize repairs exist.

If your building still uses older commodes, replacing them with newer, low-flush models is ideal. Older toilets use up to 7 gallons of water per flush, whereas low-flush models use 1.6 gallons per flush. Imagine the money you’d save on water utility bills alone! Low-flush toilets also flush more effectively than older models, which can save you from having a clog or repair nightmare.

Similarly, washing your hands can use about 2 gallons of water per minute. Not only are you wasting water, but high water usage and pressure can lead to damaged or worn pipes, resulting in leaks. Touchless or motion-sensor faucets to the rescue!

Installing motion-sensor faucets can save as much as 30% to 50% on overall water use—which can reduce the cost to both the environment and your utility bill. Motion-sensor faucets also turn on when you need water and off when you don’t, which can prevent your pipes from working overtime.

When it comes to your building and your business, maintenance is one of the most effective ways to improve longevity and keep operations running smoothly. Whether your building maintenance procedures call for new light fixtures or HVAC systems, Zoro provides you with the most up-to-date supplies for your business. And remember, regularly reviewing our preventative building maintenance checklist helps protect your business and employees!
