How to Clean Air Vent Covers

Keeping your air vents clean can improve air circulation throughout your space and ensure that your system is working as efficiently as possible. Regular maintenance cleanings will also make it easier to do deeper cleans, which you should plan on doing at least twice a year.

Benefits of Cleaning Air Vents

Keeps your system healthy

As debris collects around your vent covers or floor registers, air flow becomes more restricted. This restriction can force your HVAC system to work even harder. This can also occur if you haven’t changed your air filter recently.

More energy efficient

When your system has to do more work, it becomes less efficient. That means burning up more energy to do the same task. This could cost the environment and your wallet.

Better air quality

Debris around your air vent covers or floor registers can get circulated back into your space, reducing the air quality. This could be particularly frustrating if you own pets or are allergic to dust.

How to Clean Floor Registers

You’ll first want to gather your tools. Many floor registers don’t require screws, but having a flathead screwdriver may help you lift the register from its slot. You also might want a vacuum or broom and a dust rag.

Maintenance Clean

If you’re conducting a maintenance clean, your focus will be to just clean the area surrounding your floor register. That means using a rag to dust off the top area of the register and the frame around it. You might also use a vacuum to pick up any additional dust or debris. How often you complete maintenance cleanings depends on the conditions in your home. Do it as often as needed, but at least every month or so.

Deep Clean

A deep clean is a bit more involved. You should plan to do a deep clean about twice a year, most likely at the beginning and the end of the winter season.

Step 1. Access floor register

Make sure your unit is off then lift the floor register from its slot. If you notice screws, unscrew these first.

Step 2. Clean area

Put your floor register aside and use a vacuum or dust rag to clean the area where the floor register belongs. Try to get any dust and residue that may have collected in the space. Then clean the area around and outside the space.

Step 3. Wash your register

Take your floor registers to the sink and wash them down with soap and water. Allow them to completely air dry before reinstalling them.

How to Clean Air Conditioner Vent Covers

Cleaning air vent covers isn’t much different from cleaning floor registers, but you might need a step ladder in addition to a vacuum or broom, dust rag, and screwdriver. You can use a drop cloth if you’re really concerned about dust falling from your ceiling, but using a vacuum or broom to clean it up should be fine. Most air vent covers have screws that will require a Phillips screwdriver.

Maintenance Clean

For a maintenance clean, you don’t have to unscrew your vent covers. Just use a rag to clean around them, and in between the slots if yours has slots. You can wrap your rag around a flathead screwdriver to help you get into small spaces. Then wipe around the surrounding area as well.

Deep Clean

Complete a deep clean about twice a year.

Step 1. Remove air vent covers

Make sure your system is off. Then, with a hand to support the center of the cover, unscrew the screws. You can wear eye goggles if you’re worried about dust falling into your eyes. Set the vents aside.

Step 2. Clean area

Use your dust rag or vacuum attachment to remove dust and debris from the inside area around where your vent is installed.

Step 3. Wash your vent covers

Most air vent covers are made of metal. These are fine to wash. Just bring the vents to your sink and wash with soap and water. Rinse completely and allow to fully air dry.

Step 4. Remove external debris

After you’ve reinstalled your air vent covers, wash off the area again and vacuum or sweep the floor underneath you to make sure you’ve captured any remaining debris.

That’s it! Your vents should be working better already. If you feel like it’s time to replace an old air vent cover or get a new floor register that is more decorative, learning how to install vent covers is almost as simple as cleaning them. Keep up with regular cleanings and replace your air filters often to make sure you’re always getting the best air quality and the most efficient use of your system.
