Manufacturing Trends in 2025

The rise of artificial intelligence and other smart technologies is leading the way in global manufacturing trends. These exciting advancements are providing many manufacturers cost-saving, efficiency-driving benefits by allowing them to produce more than ever before. Let’s take a look at what’s trending in manufacturing technology in 2025.

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is helping manufacturers dramatically increase efficiency. Many tasks, including equipment monitoring, operation, and maintenance, can now be done remotely while still being able to communicate in real time. The ability for manufacturers to make goods remotely helps to increase access, flexibility, and safety.

AI has enabled the development of “dark factories,” which are factories that run entirely by automation. In addition, the rise of cognitive automation—which uses advanced AI to optimize automation during live production—will become increasingly popular in 2025.

Manufacturers will continue to harness the power of generative AI to drive efficiencies and speed up production. The aim is to produce stronger, lighter components as seen already in the aerospace and automotive sectors.

Smart Factories

Manufacturers are moving increasingly towards the smart factory business model to cut costs and increase customer satisfaction. In fact, according to the 2024 Smart Factories and Digital Production Survey by the Manufacturing Leadership Council, of those surveyed, 50% plan to use new technology, such as AI and machine learning, in their production facilities by 2026.

What once was sporadic or occasional adaptation of smart factory technologies is now becoming full-fledged integration where manufacturers are taking advantage of such benefits as data analytics and better communication between central monitoring tools and machinery. The rise in the more widespread use of smart factories is thought to be attributed to many factors, including:

  • As older machines are phased out, newer models are equipped with onboard sensors and monitoring tools.
  • Manufacturers need to stay competitive.
  • New technologies are helping manufacturers predict when machines need maintenance or when processes can be optimized, which can reduce downtime and increase efficiencies.

Another driver of more widespread adoption of the smart factory model is that integrating these new technologies is becoming more and more affordable for business owners. Coupled with the probability that these technologies will make manufacturing processes more efficient, manufacturers are realizing the overall benefits for their organization and bottom line.

An important component of the smart factory model is the use of robots. Robots have had a place in manufacturing for more than 50 years. However, today’s robots are working alongside humans to carry out different tasks and even become more efficient in their roles over time. As robots become more advanced and move away from the production line, it’s believed that humans will develop new skills around leading and interacting with their robotic teammates—sometimes referred to as “cobots.”

Internet of Things (IoT) and Predictive Maintenance

Remote monitoring, connected devices, sensors, and the IoT have been trending in manufacturing for years, and 2025 will be no different. Machinery sensors are becoming increasingly commonplace, which makes communications more reliable and pervasive. Manufacturers are using predictive analytics tools to work more effectively and determine when maintenance will be needed. This data is valuable for manufacturers because it helps to eliminate the costly effects of downtime. New 5G networks have also given manufacturers the necessary bandwidth and speed to bring even more information from devices to a central server.

3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing

3D printing and other additive manufacturing technologies have revolutionized the sector because of how quickly and accurately they can make prototypes and products. Waiting for parts for repairs will increasingly become a thing of the past when they can be made on site, reducing downtime.
