Cotter Pins, also known as coter pins, cotter clips, hairpin cotters, or cotter keys are metal fasteners used to secure two components together. They are designed to provide a secure connection between two pieces of material while allowing for quick and easy disassembly.

Types of Cotter Pins

Cotter pins come in a variety of sizes and styles. Common sizes range from 3 inch cotter pins to 5/64 cotter pins. Different types include automotive cotter pins, bending cotter pins, hairpin retaining clips, locking cotter pins, round cotter pin, self-locking cotter pin, small cotters pin and split pins. Depending on the application different materials such as steel or stainless steel may be used.

How Cotter Pins are Made

The construction of Cotter Pins is fairly simple with most being constructed from a single piece of metal wire that has been bent into an S shape or U shape with the ends cut off at an angle. The diameter of the wire will depend on the size and type of Cotters Pin being made.

Industries that use Coter Pins

Coter Pins have many applications across industries including automotive manufacturing and repair shops, agriculture equipment maintenance shops and general construction sites. Professionals use them to join pieces securely yet still allow for quick disassembly when necessary.
