The stem has a brass inlay wear strip and the head has brass rubbing strips. Unlike ordinary marking gauges, whose steel scribing pin is designed to mark along the grain, the cutting gauge is equipped with a cutting blade which will cleanly sever cross-grain fibers without tearing.
