Gas welding outfits consist of a gas cylinder, a regulator, a hose, a torch, and tips or nozzles. The gas cylinder holds the fuel gas, typically acetylene. The regulator controls the flow of gas from the cylinder to the torch. The hose connects the regulator to the torch. The torch mixes the fuel gas with oxygen and directs the flame to the workpiece. Tips and nozzles vary in size and shape to accommodate different welding applications.

The most common fuel gases used in gas welding are acetylene, propane, and natural gas. Acetylene produces the hottest flame and is best suited for welding thick metals. Propane is less expensive than acetylene and produces a slightly cooler flame. Natural gas is an accessible fuel gas but produces the coolest flame.

Gas welding torches are designed to create a flame for welding, while cutting torches are designed to create a flame for cutting. The cutting torch has a larger orifice than the welding torch, which allows it to deliver more oxygen to the flame. This results in a hotter flame that is capable of cutting through metal.

When using a gas welding outfit, it is important to take the following safety precautions: Wear appropriate protective clothing, including gloves, eye protection, and a welding helmet. Ensure that the work area is well-ventilated to prevent the buildup of harmful gases. Keep the torch away from flammable materials and never point the torch at yourself or others. Disconnect the gas cylinder from the regulator when not in use.
