Ask the Expert: Tips for Enhancing Warehouse Safety in Your Small Business

Are you a small business owner or warehouse manager looking to boost safety, productivity, and efficiency in your workplace? Zoro’s very own John Komaromy, Senior Manager of Reverse Logistics and Warehouse Operations, recently shared his insights into how small warehouses can make simple improvements that not only reduce the risk of injury, but enhance their operations in a number of other ways, too.

With more than 20 years of experience, John oversees the development and management of Zoro's Reverse Logistics and returns program operations. Leveraging his deep supply chain and logistics expertise, John is currently standardizing and simplifying processes at Zoro to create a strategic, industry-leading returns network. Marc Rohr, Zoro's Warehouse Team Lead, served as an additional resource who has been instrumental in the business's day to day operations and safety initiatives.

In this guide, John shares his thoughts on the importance of warehouse efficiency—and in particular, how a safe and efficient warehouse is such an important cornerstone for the success of a small business. He also points to the importance of focusing on employee well-being, whether that means reducing injury risk through safety measures or simply limiting the wear and tear on employees' bodies with ergonomic improvements in the warehouse.

Upgrade Your Equipment to Reduce Physical Strain

One simple way to reduce physical strain and improve maneuverability in your warehouse is to replace any manual push pallet jacks with electric pallet jacks.

You can also minimize the need for bending and lifting by purchasing pallet lifts for your warehouse, which will help to reduce the risk of injury and increase your team members' efficiency at their workstations.

Handle Small and Heavy Cartons Safely

When dealing with heavy parcels and packages, it's extremely important to practice proper lifting techniques and use the right equipment to reduce strain. Proper lifting techniques include getting as close to each object as possible, using a wide stance, gripping firmly with both hands, and lifting slowly by extending your legs with your back straight. You should also make sure to use a clear work area without debris or obstructions. Know the weight of each item you're lifting, too, so that you can determine whether or not you'll need help to lift it.

Workstation ergonomics also plays an important role. For any workspaces where heavy cartons are frequently processed, consider installing ergonomic equipment such as adjustable worktables and mechanical aids.

Enhance Ergonomics and Safety in Your Warehouse

Ergonomic safety matting is another useful tool for improving safety and productivity in your warehouse. By installing matting, you can help to reduce fatigue and discomfort for any team members who need to stand for long periods.

Wearing steel-toe shoes is also important for protecting your team from foot injuries caused by heavy objects.

Implement Safety Measures and Guidelines

Use safety signage and tape in the warehouse to create clear boundaries and guide team members toward safe movement in your workspace.

If you work directly with delivery drivers, make sure to carefully consider your driver safety protocols, too. For example, it's always important to set clear guidelines for delivery drivers, which might include restricting their access beyond certain points in the warehouse for safety reasons.

Search for Ways to Continuously Improve Safety, and Provide Employee Training

Making one-time adjustments in support of warehouse safety and ergonomics can make a big difference, but it's not enough on its own. You should also regularly assess and improve ergonomic conditions in the warehouse as part of an ongoing commitment to employee well-being.

You can train your employees to support your safety and efficiency efforts, too. Make sure they're aware of any safety protocols and ergonomic best practices that will help your team maintain a safe and productive work environment.

By investing in better equipment, ergonomic solutions, and safety measures in the warehouse, you can not only protect your employees from injury, but also boost your efficiency and productivity at the same time. Whether you're running a small business or managing a warehouse, try making a few of these changes and upgrades today to protect your employees and give your operations a boost that will last for years to come.
