Music is a dignified expression for the Dinka tribes of Southern Sudan. Here is a presentation of hymns and war songs of the type that are sung at a funeral for a chief, in this case, that of scholar Dr. Francis Deng’s father. The hymns and war songs are focused towards the occasion of death, though the energetic and strident style of delivery may appear to belie the solemnity of a funeral. Extensive liner notes include English translations.
