What is the difference between a tarp and a ground cloth?

A tarp is a heavy-duty, waterproof sheet that is typically used to cover and protect outdoor equipment or materials. A ground cloth, on the other hand, is a lightweight, breathable fabric that is used to protect the ground from moisture and damage caused by camping or other outdoor activities.

What are the different types of tarps available?

There are several types of tarps available, each with its own unique features and applications. Some common types include: canvas tarps, which are durable and water-resistant; polyethylene tarps, which are lightweight; and ripstop tarps, which are tear-resistant and lightweight.

How do I choose the right tarp for my needs?

When choosing a tarp, consider the following factors: the size and shape of the area you need to cover; the weight and durability of the tarp; and the waterproof and tear-resistant properties of the material.

How do I care for my tarp?

To ensure the longevity of your tarp, follow these care instructions: clean it regularly with a mild detergent; store it in a dry, well-ventilated area; and repair any tears or holes promptly.

Tarps & Canvas Tarps

About Tarps

Tarps are a versatile, multi-purpose material that can be used for a variety of tasks. They are often used to protect and cover items from the elements, provide shade, create a barrier between people and objects, and even provide privacy. Tarps come in a wide range of sizes, materials, and colors. Check out our wide selection of Zoro blue tarps in a variety of sizes.

Types of Tarps

Tarps can be made from canvas, polyethylene plastic, or nylon. Canvas tarps are heavy-duty and highly durable but more expensive than their plastic counterparts. Poly tarps are lightweight yet strong enough for outdoor use and offer excellent water resistance. Nylon tarps are best suited for indoor use as they are not waterproof. Be sure to pick up some bungee cords to hold your tarps down during transport.

How Tarps Are Made

Tarps typically have several layers consisting of an outer fabric layer (usually canvas or polyethylene) with one or more inner layers of rubberized asphaltic coating that helps make them waterproof. The rubberized coating is applied through a process known as calendaring which uses heat to melt the asphaltic compound into the fabric.

Industries That Use Tarps

Tarps have many applications across multiple industries such as construction sites, warehouses, trucking companies, agricultural operations, event planners, landscapers and gardeners. Professionals in these industries rely on tarps to protect items from rain damage during transport or storage; provide privacy during events; create temporary shelters; or even serve as ground covers.
