What is the difference between a disinfectant and a sanitizer?

Disinfectants kill or inactivate microorganisms on inanimate objects, while sanitizers reduce the number of microorganisms on the hands or other surfaces to a safe level. Disinfectants are typically used on hard, non-porous surfaces, while sanitizers are used on porous surfaces such as skin or clothing.

What are the most common types of disinfectants and sanitizers?

Common disinfectants include chlorine bleach, hydrogen peroxide, and quaternary ammonium compounds. Common sanitizers include alcohol-based hand sanitizers, hydrogen peroxide, and chlorine dioxide.

How do I use disinfectants and sanitizers safely?

Always follow the instructions on the product label. Disinfectants and sanitizers can be harmful if not used properly. Wear gloves and protective clothing when using disinfectants. Rinse surfaces thoroughly after disinfecting. Sanitizers should be applied to clean hands or surfaces.

What are some tips for choosing the right disinfectant or sanitizer for my needs?

Consider the type of surface you need to clean, the level of disinfection or sanitization you need, and the safety concerns. If you are unsure which product to choose, consult with a professional.
