Fabric softeners are positively charged chemicals that attach to the negatively charged fibers of fabrics. This reduces static electricity and makes fabrics softer and more flexible.

There are three main types of fabric softeners: liquid, dryer sheets, and liquid capsules. Liquid fabric softeners are added to the washing machine during the rinse cycle. Dryer sheets are added to the dryer and release fragrance and fabric softening agents as the clothes tumble. Liquid capsules are pre-measured, single-use doses of fabric softener that dissolve in the wash water.

Using fabric softeners has several benefits, including reducing static electricity, making fabrics softer and more comfortable to wear, and reducing wrinkles. Fabric softeners can also help to extend the life of fabrics by reducing wear and tear.

Fabric softeners are generally safe to use, but there are some potential risks to consider. Some people may experience skin irritation or allergic reactions to fabric softeners. Additionally, fabric softeners can build up on fabrics over time, which can lead to decreased absorbency and a waxy feel.
