There are 2 basic types of punches: hollow and solid. Hollow punches are made to puncture (and make a hole) in a surface like leather or sheet metal. There are many sizes of solid punches, each with a very specific function. Pin punches can drive or remove pins after being loosened. Roll pin punches, or pilot punches are used to drive or remove tension pins. Taper punches can be used to align existing holes as well as drive or loosen pins. Center punches are used to mark a material where a hole needs to be drilled. Prick punches are basically the same as center punches but for soft material like plastic or wood. Aligning punches are not meant for striking, but for aligning 2 or more holes that need to be fastened together.
