What are Jointers & Planers used for?

Jointers and planers are woodworking machines used primarily to smooth, flatten, and square stock, particularly rough lumber. Jointers create precise, flat surfaces on the edge of the wood, ensuring a seamless connection between two pieces. Planers, also known as thickness planers, reduce the thickness of the wood, creating consistent dimensions throughout its length.

What key features should I consider when choosing a Jointer or Planer?

When selecting a Jointer or Planer, consider crucial features such as the maximum cutting width, which determines the largest workpiece you can handle. Additionally, the type of cutterhead (spiral or helical) affects the cut quality and noise level. The table length and fence accuracy influence the stability and precision of your cuts. Furthermore, attention to horsepower, variable speed control, and dust collection capabilities ensures efficient and optimized operation.

How do I use a Jointer & Planer safely?

Safety is paramount when operating Jointers and Planers. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, and a dust mask. Ensure the machine is grounded and all guards are in place. Feed the workpiece slowly and steadily, avoiding contact with rotating cutter blades. Keep hands clear of the outfeed table and avoid overfeeding, which can cause kickback or damage to the machine.

What types of Jointers & Planers are available?

Jointers come in various types, including benchtop jointers, floor-standing jointers, and wide-belt jointers, each suited for different needs and workpiece sizes. Planers also offer a range of options, from benchtop planers ideal for hobbyists to industrial-grade planers for high-volume production environments. Consider the size, power, and features required for your specific applications.
