About Keyed Shafts
Keyed Shafts are designed to transmit torque and rotation between two components. They are usually made of hardened steel, stainless steel, or aluminum and can be used in a variety of applications.
Types of Keyed Shafts
The type of Keyed Shaft you choose will depend on the application. Commonly used types include splined shafts, parallel keyed shafts, taper keyed shafts, and square keyed shafts. Splined shafts are ideal for transmitting rotational power from one component to another with minimal backlash. Parallel keyed shafts feature multiple keys along the length that help prevent slipping and provide extra stability. Taper keyed shafts have a tapered end that fits into a matching taper slot in the mating component for secure locking power transmission. Square keyed shafts feature four flat sides that fit into corresponding slots in the mating part.
How Keyed Shafts are Made
Keyed Shafts are made by machining them from metal stock material such as hardened steel, stainless steel or aluminum alloy bar stock. The machining process includes turning, drilling and milling operations which create threads for attachment points as well as slots to accept keys or splines.
Industries That Use Keyed Shafts
Keyed Shafts can be found in industries ranging from automotive manufacturing to aerospace engineering. Professionals use them in everything from electric motors and transmissions to pumps and compressors.
