Marsden Hartley was an American Modernist painter, poet, and essayist. Hartley was influenced by European modernist painters like Cezanne, Picasso, and Matisse; inspiration from the American transcendentalists Thoreau and Emerson led him to view art as a spiritual quest. After living around the U.S. and Europe, Hartley found a place in the Regionalism movement, declaring his desire to become "the painter of Maine".
