About Current Transformers

Measure and monitor AC current with a current transformer. This type of transformer enables the safe and ongoing monitoring of high currents without having to tap the load circuit with a probe. Within these transformers, a secondary winding surrounds the primary load carrier and generates a proportional current that can be measured by an ammeter. That proportional current can also open an overload relay if the current exceeds a set threshold. Manufacturers include Square D, Simpson electric and others.

Current Transformers are vital electrical devices primarily employed to measure electric current in circuits. Their essential function lies in reducing high current values to safer and more manageable levels, enabling accurate monitoring and protection.

CTs function based on the principle of electromagnetic induction. They consist of a primary winding connected in series with the circuit carrying the current to be measured and a secondary winding connected to a measuring device. When current flows through the primary winding, it generates a magnetic field, which then induces a proportional current in the secondary winding.

CTs come in various types, each designed for specific applications. Common types include: Window CTs, Split-core CTs, Rogowski Coils, and Clamp-on CTs. Window CTs fit around a busbar or cable, while Split-core CTs can be conveniently clamped around existing conductors. Rogowski Coils use flexible coils to measure current, and Clamp-on CTs are non-invasive, allowing for quick and easy measurements.

Selecting appropriate CTs requires careful consideration of several factors: primary current rating, accuracy class, burden, insulation, and environmental conditions. Matching the CT's primary current rating to the circuit's current is crucial. Accuracy class determines the precision of the CT's measurements, while burden influences the load the CT can handle. Insulation ensures safe operation in various environments, and environmental conditions, such as temperature and humidity, must be taken into account for optimal performance.
