The recommended length of an extension cord depends on the intended use and the amount of power required. For most indoor applications, a cord between 6 and 15 feet is sufficient. Longer cords are available for outdoor use or for reaching distant outlets.

Indoor extension cords are designed for use in dry, climate-controlled environments, while outdoor extension cords are specifically designed to withstand harsh weather conditions and prevent electrical shorts or fires. Outdoor cords have a thicker insulation and are often treated with water-resistant or UV-resistant materials.

Extension cords should never be overloaded or used with high-power appliances. It is crucial to check the wattage of the device and ensure that the cord is rated for the required amperage. Additionally, extension cords should always be fully extended to prevent overheating and should not be placed under carpets or furniture.

The gauge of an extension cord refers to the thickness of the wire, which determines the amount of current it can safely carry. Higher-gauge cords (e.g., 12 AWG or 14 AWG) are thicker and can handle higher amperage, while lower-gauge cords (e.g., 16 AWG or 18 AWG) are thinner and suitable for lower-power applications. Matching the gauge to the intended use is essential for safety and performance.
