Piston valves come in two primary types: an angle body piston valve or a piston metal check valve. Angle body piston valves are used for 2-way direct acting flow or stoppage of steam, hot water, solvents, and light slurries. Items vary by temperature range, maximum pressure, actuator type, dimensions and other considerations. Piston metal check valves (AKA lift check valves) provide a swift, quiet flow cessation via a spring-loaded piston, making them well-suited to pulsating flow systems. Both of these types of valves are often referred to as “steam valves” but are not limited to controlling the flow of steam.
