Why might I use ultra-high vacuum fittings?

Ultra-High Vacuum (UHV) Fittings are used to create and maintain a high vacuum in a system. Vacuum systems with pressures in the 10^-6 to 10^-12 Torr range are considered UHV. UHV fittings are critical in industries such as aerospace, electronics, and scientific research, where precise control of atmosphere and pressure is crucial.

What are the essential characteristics of ultra-high vacuum fittings?

UHV fittings are characterized by their ability to withstand high vacuum, their low outgassing rates, and their cleanability. They are typically made from stainless steel, which is resistant to corrosion and has a low outgassing rate. UHV fittings are also designed to be leak-tight, with minimal virtual leaks, maintaining the vacuum's integrity.

How do I ensure the proper installation and maintenance of ultra-high vacuum fittings?

Proper installation and maintenance are imperative to maintain the integrity of UHV fittings. Ensure that all components are clean and free from contaminants before assembly. Use appropriate tools and techniques to tighten fittings properly, avoiding overtightening. Regularly inspect and clean fittings to maintain their leak-tightness and low outgassing rates. Following these precautions will extend the life of your fittings and optimize vacuum performance.

What are the different types of ultra-high vacuum fittings available?

UHV fittings come in various types to accommodate different vacuum applications. Common types include flanges, connectors, valves, and feedthroughs. Flanges are used to connect two vacuum chambers or components, while connectors provide electrical or fluid connections. Valves control the flow of gases or fluids within the vacuum system. Feedthroughs allow electrical signals or other utilities to pass through the vacuum barrier. Choosing the appropriate type of fitting is vital for achieving the desired vacuum performance.
