A socket is a hollow cylinder with internal teeth that fits over the head of a fastener, while a ratchet is a wrench that uses a ratcheting mechanism to tighten or loosen fasteners. A ratchet allows for continuous turning without repositioning the wrench, making it ideal for use in tight spaces or when working with repetitive motions.

There are many different types of sockets, including hex, square, Torx, and spline sockets. Each type is designed to fit a specific type of fastener head. Hex sockets are the most common type and are used with hexagonal bolts and nuts. Square sockets are used with square bolts and nuts, and Torx sockets are used with Torx bolts and nuts. Spline sockets are designed to fit fasteners with splined heads, which provide a more secure fit than hex or square heads.

There are two main types of ratchets: standard ratchets and flex-head ratchets. Standard ratchets have a fixed head, while flex-head ratchets have a head that can be pivoted. Flex-head ratchets are ideal for use in tight spaces or when working at an angle. Ratchets also come in a variety of sizes, from small ratchets that are ideal for working on small fasteners to large ratchets that are designed for heavy-duty applications.

When choosing a socket and ratchet, it is important to consider the size and type of fasteners you will be working with. You should also consider the amount of torque you will need to apply. For most applications, a standard ratchet and a set of hex sockets will suffice. However, if you will be working with larger fasteners or need to apply more torque, you may need to choose a larger ratchet or a set of impact sockets.
